Missing teeth are a thing of the past thanks to modern advancements with dental technology. Our dentist can fix chipped, cracked, broken, or even missing teeth. When it comes to missing teeth, Dr. Richard Weimar of Weimar Family Dentistry offers a long-term solution: dental implants.

 The Issues With Missing Teeth

It may not seem like a serious issue to have one or more missing teeth but the problems tend to develop over time. If you have one missing tooth, the teeth next to the missing one are automatically at a higher risk for moving out of position. This is because they have additional stress on them as you eat foods. In addition, if the jawbone starts to deteriorate where the missing tooth was, it could cause the adjacent teeth to move or fall out entirely. Bone deterioration can also lead to a misshapen jaw or face.

Bridges and Dentures Do Not Fix All the Issues

Bridges and dentures are also viable treatment options for missing teeth but they do not offer the same benefits as implants. Bridges are more cosmetic in nature because they use a fake tooth in place of the missing one. This tooth does not have any roots to stimulate the jawbone which prevents bone loss. Dentures can also cause irritation to the gums and are prone to slipping or falling off because they are only secured in place with a bonding strip or paste. It also does not prevent gum or bone deterioration.

Implants Offer Additional Benefits

On the other hand, dental implants offer numerous benefits:

  • They last for decades or even a lifetime
  • You can still eat your favorite foods
  • They offer support to the jawbone
  • They are easy to care for
  • They look and function like real teeth
