If you are missing one or more teeth, you are likely wondering what your options are for restoring your smile. With advances in modern implant dentistry, dental implants have become a viable solution for many patients seeking to replace a lost tooth. There are three main steps to achieving a successful implant.

1. An Initial Consultation

At Shoreline Periodontics, we believe you should understand all your options before making decisions regarding your teeth and oral care. During an initial consultation, we will discuss all the choices available to you and provide accurate information about the pros and cons of each option. Armed with these details, you can make decisions that fit your lifestyle. We can then chart a course of treatment that is right for you. You must have adequate bone density in order for the implant procedure to be successful, and our physicians will ascertain your individual needs and situation and then discuss options for bone augmentation if it is required prior to placing the implant.

2. The Procedure

During your procedure, a titanium post will be placed in your jawbone. This is accomplished through a small slit in the gums. After placement, the bone will begin to fuse to the post, creating a stable base for your new tooth. This process, known as osseointegration, will occur between two and six months after the procedure. During this time, a temporary tooth can be inserted as a placeholder to augment your smile and prevent your teeth from shifting.

3. Fusing and Finalization

Once the post is securely fused, your permanent, custom replacement crown can be affixed. Because it is anchored in your jaw bone, this new tooth will allow you to bite, chew, laugh and speak normally and, with proper care, can last for the rest of your life. Traditional brushing and flossing is recommended to ensure the health of the surrounding teeth and gums.
