To stimulate bone growth and maintain the shape of your face, implants are placed directly in the jawbone. If there is not enough jawbone to support the implant, it may be necessary to lift the sinus floor around the nose and develop the needed bone.

The Technique

The procedure is started where the back teeth used to be, and the gum tissue is cut. To expose the bone, the gum tissue is raised and an oval, small window is then opened into the bone. The sinus is separated from the jaw by a membrane lining, which is pushed up and away from the jaw to make room for additional bone.

Now that the sinus has been moved, the area is packed with bone graft material granules. Although the amount varies for each patient, average is to add several millimeters of bone. After the bone is placed, the area is closed with stitches. After a recovery period of anywhere from four to nine months, the implant can be placed. During this time, the bone has had a chance to mesh with the grafted material.

You may wonder where the extra bone material comes from, and there are several options:

  • Xenograft: cow bones
  • Allogeneic: cadaver bone
  • Autogenous: your own body
