If you’ve had missing teeth for any period, you know how many disadvantages there can be. One of the complaints we hear most often is that our patients who are missing teeth are limited in what they can eat and when. Fortunately, we have a solution in dental implants. Do you want to enjoy every aspect of your Thanksgiving meal this year? If so, Dr. Crandall can help!

What Are Implants?

Many patients opt for dentures when they have missing teeth, but dentures have their own set of problems and dental implants are often the more beneficial option. Implants are small titanium rods that are placed in the jawbone. Once the rod is placed, the jaw is given time to heal and the cells connect with the rod. Eventually the rod functions as the natural root would and stimulates the jawbone to grow. This prevents bone loss in the jaw.

Once the rod is centered in the jaw and healing has taken place, an abutment is placed over the top and will eventually hold the final product. After a short healing phase, your dentist will place the tooth on the abutment. In this way, the tooth is connected to the rod without being sent through the gums.

Why Dental Implants?

The most obvious benefit to implants is that they look exactly like your natural teeth. If you are only missing one tooth, the implant can be matched exactly to your remaining teeth. It is virtually impossible to detect if dental implants are real or fake, and even better, they function as natural teeth would. This means you can eat, brush, floss and speak without worry about your teeth slipping.

Implants are a valuable option for almost every patient that wants to repair a broken smile. If you are interested in learning more about them and starting a journey to enjoying the food at every holiday, contact South Hill Dental Arts in Pittsburgh, PA to schedule today!
