Having crooked or misaligned teeth is enough to make anyone a little nervous to smile in public. Braces are a common treatment for teeth that need straightening, but what about Invisalign®? To determine if you are a good candidate for this type of treatment, you need to carefully consult with your orthodontist in Riverview, FL. Dr. Matt Ahrens of South Shore Orthodontics can discuss with you your habits and explain how Invisalign® works. Here are a few parameters you can consider to see if you might be a good candidate for aligners.

State of Your Teeth

Clear aligners as used with Invisalign® treatment are a great option for those with mild misalignment in their teeth. If you have serious bite issues and gaps or severely crooked teeth, you may need to look into other treatment options, including oral surgery or braces. Sometimes, aligners are a great option for retention treatment after surgery or braces.

Your Age

Younger children with misaligned teeth have an advantage in that their teeth are still growing and easier to adjust. For this reason aligners are not necessarily a great option for kids. However, they can be useful for older teens and adults whose permanent teeth are in place and more difficult to adjust.

Your Ability To Follow Orthodontic Instructions

For Invisalign® treatment to be successful you need to follow strict instructions. This includes wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours every day and cleaning your teeth and the aligners as instructed. If you have difficulty following orthodontic instructions or think you might forget any important steps in treatment, then you may need to explore other options that better suit your situation.
