Many patients can benefit from dental implants. However, before our dentist can install them, you will first require a check-up to make sure you are a good candidate. Similarly, to most often dental treatments, specific criteria needs to be met first. These are the three qualities every dental implant recipient needs to have first.

Healthy Gum Tissue

If our dental professional finds any cases of gingivitis in your mouth, then that will need to be treated first before you can receive an implant. Diseased gum tissue is often receded and thin, meaning it will not wrap around the restoration securely. It also increases the risk of complications during the actual procedure.

Healthy Jawbone Tissue

Unlike other restorations, dental implants go through a process known as osseointegration. This means the restoration needs to fuse with the jawbone itself to work properly. Some people may not have strong enough jawbone tissue for osseointegration to work. The jawbone is more likely to be deteriorated if the patient is older or has waited over a year to replace the missing tooth with an implant.

Dedication to Excellent Oral Hygiene

Implants can last a lifetime if taken care of properly. If you are going to go down this route, then you need to take care of your oral structures in the aftermath. This means avoiding smoking or chewing tobacco as the chemicals risk the integrity of the restoration. Additionally, you should avoid chewing on ice cubes, fingernails and other tough structures that could damage the crown on top of the implant. Finally, patients should always be committed to brushing twice a day or flossing once daily to keep their mouths healthy.
