Types of Bone Grafts

The main difference between bone grafts is the material used to create them. Here are the options in most common use today:

  • Factor-based bone grafts that use natural regenerative techniques and recombinant efforts
  • Allograft materials use bone alone or in combination with proprietary artificial materials
  • Polymer-based options provide a synthetic alternative that adds strength to the area the graft is placed in
  • Cell-based approaches grow new bone using stem cells and sometimes scaffolding
  • Ceramic-based grafts provide many of the same benefits as polymer grafts, but with a more natural mimicry of the original bone tissue
