Implants are known to improve patient quality of life while offering a permanent solution to missing teeth. They’re flexible and can be used for a single tooth or a full arch replacement, and they are stronger than alternatives like bridge work and dentures. One of the biggest challenges to patients who want dental implants after losing teeth due to periodontal disease is the loss of bone that is needed to support the implant anchors. Unfortunately, advanced periodontal disease leads to just that bone loss. Luckily, a variety of bone grafting techniques in Medford and Moorestown, NJ are available to help.

Types of Bone Grafts

The main difference between bone grafts is the material used to create them. Here are the options in most common use today:

  • Factor-based bone grafts that use natural regenerative techniques and recombinant efforts
  • Allograft materials use bone alone or in combination with proprietary artificial materials
  • Polymer-based options provide a synthetic alternative that adds strength to the area the graft is placed in
  • Cell-based approaches grow new bone using stem cells and sometimes scaffolding
  • Ceramic-based grafts provide many of the same benefits as polymer grafts, but with a more natural mimicry of the original bone tissue

When you need dental implants but you’ve lost bone tissue, Dr. Canal or Dr. Calem will work with you to decide which approach is most likely to give you the results you need to be able to support the implants. There may be other procedures that are necessary in addition to a bone graft, but the only way to know is to consult with us.
