Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. While there are some instances in which certain factors lead to dental implant failure, the incidence of such occurrence fortunately is low. Proper integration of the implant post into the jaw bone is crucial for success – for without it, the bone is unable to provide sufficient support for the post and the dental implant restoration (crown, bridge or denture) that affixes to it. The earlier potential problems are identified, the greater the chance of implant success and longevity.

When to Replace a Dental Implant Restoration

The prosthetics created to restore dental implant posts are subjected to wear and tear in the mouth over time. Used to bite, chew and tear food, dental implant restorations are put to work daily, just like natural teeth. The materials used to fabricate implant crowns, bridges and dentures have the potential to wear down and may therefore require replacement at some future point. Factors that lead to the need for dental implant restoration replacement include:
  • Wear and tear
  • Bruxism (clenching or grinding)
  • Chips, breaks or fractures in the material
  • Mobility of a permanent implant restoration

Signs of Dental Implant Failure

While a dental implant restoration can often be replaced easily, replacing an implant post is more complicated. Identifying and addressing the following signs of dental implant failure early on is imperative to saving the implant:
  • Mobility of the dental implant
  • Persistent pain around the implant
  • Presence of pus or bad taste near the implant
  • Swelling or discoloration of gum tissue in the implant site
  • Peri-implantitis (inflammation of the gum tissue and bone surrounding a dental implant post)

How to Prevent Dental Implant Failure

The best method of preventing dental implant failure is to keep regular dental appointments for cleanings and periodic exams as recommended by your dentist. Proper, meticulous homecare is also essential to the health of the implant and its surrounding gum and bone tissues.
